This is how the garden grows, 2024,

Dimensions variable, vinyl photograph, inkjet prints, glass vitrines containing elements of earth/air/fire/water, flowers grown in the gardens of sex workers, quartz, jute.


Materials used in the glass containers:

EARTH: Soil from the Choctaw ancestral homelands in Alabama, soil from the Trail of Tears near my home in Tennessee, and red soil from the Chickasaw Reservation in Oklahoma where I grew up and my family had continuously lived for 175 years


AIR: Words spoken into the vessel calling for abolishing the prison industrial complex, the decriminalization of sex work, landback and reparations for all colonized people, need for automation tax, basic universal income, and a post-scarcity economy

FIRE: Burnt copies of the Doctrine of Discovery, the Balfour Declaration, the Indian Act of 1876, the Indian Removal Act of 1830, US Military budget for 2024, Citizens United vs FEC, and an annual bill for my HIV medications totaling $89,080.92.


WATER: Water from the spring that feeds my home in Tennessee, morning dew from my garden, and tears of rage
